Córdoba

Leisurely day! Waking up early and staying in bed! What a change from the last few days. Latish breakfast “at home” and walk to the Mezquita - we had tickets for 9:30 am. On the steps was Ilka who had had an early morning visit.

Well, the Mezquita really is quite overwhelming. It used to be a major mosque equal to Mekka in importance to the Western Mediterranean world. A vast building with a forest of columns. And in the middle a cathedral was built after the reconquista. An amazing blend of Muslim and Christian building styles.

After this extremely tiring visit a longish sit-down for coffee in the shade - the night had been quite cool, but now it was heating up quickly.

On to the Roman Temple - not much left to see, but this is a project in the making. Walking about all over the place we came across a church dedicated to the expiring Christ and a sort of missionaries’ congregation attached to it: Hermandad de l’Expiración. And we ended up in the Palacio de Viana, quite a modest looking building seen from the street with an amazing never ending succession of patios in various styles. And drinks again in a café after a bit of a walk to get closer to “home” just in case I fold up with fatigue - it can hit me quite suddenly and then I want/need to get home quickly for a lie-down - last night at the restaurant I almost fell asleep right there and then  - it had been a very tiring day after all!

So Andrea and Ilka went to the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the Palace of the Christian Kings, whereas Duncan and I went home for my siesta. Had a second siesta later in the afternoon and am now waiting to go out to another fancy restaurant, living it up in style!

  1. Very impressive building- much nicer than the Spanish churches I’ve been in which were almost always very dark and depressing.

  2. So many interesting buildings in this town! Too many tourists though, as everywhere. Covid? Where? Well, what can I say? I am here too....
