Day 7. Monday, 29/05/2023. Castuera to Campanario

Just above 5 h    24 km     plus Pauses of 2h and 50 mins

We are sitting in a restaurant in Campanaria, the end of our walk today - except that the hostal where we are going to stay is 2.5 km out of town. In the old railway station - a private hostal i.e. private rooms but shared bathrooms. With no food to be had there tonight we decided to have a major stop here. High time too for me after 2h30 non-stop walk - or practically non-stop - at one point we had a stop to put on our rain gear because it started spitting, but in the end it did not get any worse. After the experience the day before yesterday we did not want to take any risk.

So this morning we were out at 8 am. Easy walking again all day, but very little road, mostly sandy tracks across the countryside. Countryside the same as before, mildly ondulating, the track winding its way through the fields, lightly up and down, very pleasant. Rocky outcrops occasionally again - of slate such that the track is dark grey in those places. Also big boulders in the fields like yesterday and there was a huge quarry of this stone, grey, but not granit I think.

More photos of plants along the way, hemlock at various stages of development and also a type of thistle which I did not see in flower. And one of a multitude of holes all along the way since the beginning of our walk - holes in the track with lots of ants coming and going. An ant city under the track every time? Sometimes there were several holes close to one another. And I observed a big ant chasing away a little one….

We are now installed in our railway station! A lovely old building, the same style as the small old unused railway station we came across two(?) days ago, but this one much bigger. The same line. As we were approaching Campanario there was a goods train going on this line. And just as we were installing ourselves a short passenger train arrived and stopped at our station. You remember Colombres, Alison, which was a request stop where you and Andrea left me after having walked with me for several days?
In charge of this albergue is a lady from Colombia. With two helpers she is doing it up. A lot of work she says. Mostly painting, decorating… Three of the four upstairs rooms and one of the two bathrooms are finished. The large downstairs hall serves as a communal room with several sofas. No kitchen facilities, I think. But there is a bar/restaurant next door - closed on Mondays. Our luck! So much for now….
